It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the death of our friend and colleague Siobhan Bogues. Siobhan passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. She had been suffering from cancer.

Siobhan was well known in the field of health and social care throughout NI and had a professional record that will be a huge loss to the sector. She began her career in Social Work in 1983 and held a number of senior posts before becoming Director of ARC NI from 1999-2012.

In 2011 Siobhan founded the Lighthouse Centre on the Cavehill Road in Belfast and that is where most people from Caring Breaks met her. Siobhan was passionate about promoting the rights of people with a learning disability to be included in the life of the local community. At the Lighthouse Centre, Siobhan created a haven of peace and tranquillity where the hand of friendship was extended to everyone.

Siobhan also hosted a very special event at the Lighthouse Centre for Caring Breaks - the Yog-Art evenings. This mixture of relaxation therapies and arts & crafts workshops for people with a learning disability was very popular with our clients. It provided a great opportunity for them to try new things, meet new people and spend some time relaxing in each other’s company. Needless to say everyone loved going to the Lighthouse and of course, loved Siobhan.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her from many walks of life, but none more than her beloved family and we extend our sincere sympathy to them. Siobhan leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and care that everyone who came into contact with her felt - we will miss her very much.
