Natural World Challenge

This five year project which we believe is unique in the UK – started in 2010 when Caring Breaks was awarded almost £900,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to run the Natural World Challenge Project (NWC).

In partnership with Ulster Wildlife, the aim of this project is to raise awareness of nature and the protection of the environment both for adults with a learning disability and their family carers.

This project is very important to our clients, as they get the opportunity to engage with nature in a supported and structured manner.  For many this is a totally new experience.

These activities not only promote good health and well-being, but also strengthen and assist family relationships.  Our clients tell us that they are able to share their experiences of the natural world with their families and continue with their new found hobbies and interests at home.

The NWC project provides adults with a learning disability with the opportunity to discover a whole range of new and innovative activities.  They have been able to experience the natural world in a way that others in the wider community perhaps take for granted.
